This week is Malcolm Mc Gettigan. Malcolm is a Dublin based photographer specialising in commerical, fashion and portrait photography. His work has previously been featured in PhotoIreland Festival, Nakid Magazine and Satiety Paper.
What is Instagram for you?
Aside from being a bit of a distraction, Instagram is an instant and easy way to get work seen. Perhaps not that many people see it initially, but it can potentially act as a portfolio or visual diary for creatives.
Why/when did you decide to start sharing your work on there?
I think I’ve been posting stuff for about 5 years. But didn’t really use it as a platform to show what I was shooting with my camera until about 2 or 3 years ago. I have slowly been showing more from the camera as opposed to the phone.
How would you describe your style?
If I had to describe my style I would say it’s quite loose. When I developed an interest in photography, I was drawn the the more cinematic elements of it from composition to lighting. I think for me ‘style’ or aesthetic is something that’s constantly evolving.
Who has been or currently is an influence on you?
I think in recent times I’ve been more influenced by my surroundings, where I go and where I live. The inner city can have a lot to offer by way of a cultural and visual tapestry in today’s Dublin. Photographers that have always stood out for me have been William Eggleston and Saul Leiter for their approach to street photography, and more recently Gregory Crewdson, Erwin Olaf and Philip Lorca Dicorcia for their approach to lighting the scene. Dicorcia’s book ‘Hustlers’ is a prized possession of mine.
