#32 | Winona Ryder

‘That disposable razor? You’ve put it through the mill.’

This week on Up To 90, we talk our favourite Sticky Fingers – Gothic Queen of the nineties Winona Ryder.

We chat elfin looks, horrendous bullying, kleptomania, Stranger Things, Little Women (seriously Jo, what an absolute melt), Beetlejuice, when baristas go bad, Reality Bites, Edward Scissorhands avec Johnny Depp and slumming it with Matt Damon.

Turns out that wealth and fame don’t bring you happiness after all (we want out money back from that pyramid scheme) and Winona found the whole Hollywood experience incredibly difficult and isolating – who knew the industry actually wasn’t full of instant BFFS?

‘Girl, Interrupted’ became a personal pet project when Winona wanted to explore mental health issues in the mainstream. Acting and producing the Oscar-winning drama, Winona had come a long way from her compelling role as a rebellious teen in cult-classic Mermaids, and at the ripe old age of 29 proved she was more than just perfect bone-structure and ethereal musings in this hard-hitting exploration of psychological breakdown (oh, and it also features a cameo from our favourite 90s crush, Jared Leto).

We also discuss the tragic case of Polly Klaas, a 12 year old kidnapped from a slumber party later found strangled and a case which Winona personally got heavily involved in solving and championing.
