Here’s where I’ll be hanging out this Science Week

Firstly, if you’d like to join me on my Science week adventure, here’s a quick round-up of what I’m involved in. Also I’ll be hosting the @Ireland twitter account for the week, so you can follow everything I’m up to from there, plus share your science week experiences or let me know about an event you found particularly good. Lets get the country talking about science, basically!

‘Scintillating Science’ with Dara O’Briain, Monday Nov 14th National Concert Hall

I’m very excited to be one of Dara Ó Briain’s guests on this show that explores why our brains love to win and what it takes to travel into outer space. I’ll be talking about space (obviously) and especially my upcoming simulated Mars mission in the Utah desert in Jan 2017.

Think this one is almost sold out though folks, but keep an eye on the website to find out more and further details here. Ireland’s king of comedy and all things science related, will be joined by special guests to explore intriguing questions like these and more, to kick off Science Week 2016. Tickets are €15/€12 if you’re lucky enough to get a hold of one.

‘To Space’ theatre show, Thursday Nov 17th 8pm, Smock Alley Theatre, Dublin

I shall be performing ‘To Space’ for the very last time as part of the Science week festivities. This one-woman show will be hosted in the intimate Boys School venue, and the story I tell is about my dream to go to Space and the attempts I made in 2014 to make that happen.  Stick around after the show as the wonderful Shaun O’Boyle will host a special ‘farewell to ‘To Space’ post-show discussion after the performance with Sarah Baxter, myself, and some of the other other creative teams who made ‘To Space’ happen. I’ll also be updating people on my current efforts to get to Space.

‘I STILL want to  go to Space’ Wednesday Nov 16th, 6pm at The Ark Children’s Theatre, Dublin

So this is my follow-on talk about my dream to go to Space and what has happened since 2014 and ‘To Space’. I will also speak about some of the recent developments in human Mars missions and the European Space agency’s plans to create a Moon village by 2030 using 3D printing technologies as well as some of my personal work that you can get involved in. The event is presented in conjunction with The Ark and supported by Science Foundation Ireland, which means it has FREE admission, but you need to book in advance here.

Shakespeare Lives in Science: Can Shakespeare make you fall in Love?

Friday Nov 18th 7pm  (Dublin Science Festival/ VIEW Temple Bar), Saturday Nov 19th 7pm (Cavan/Monaghan Festival)

In case you didn’t know it already, it’s Shakespeare’s 400th anniversary this year and the British Council have been running a global programme of events throughout the year to celebrate the bard’s massive contribution to our culture. And so we’re joining in these celebrations as part of Science week with a special Shakespeare science-themed event all about Falling in Love and the science of Passion. I’m looking forward to hosting this discussion with Hannah Manktelow, Shakespearean performance scholar, scientist and poetry slam artist Dr. Sam Illingworth, and Emer Maguire, specialist in the anatomy of love. Lots of live experiments and fun guaranteed in this light-hearted exploration of the science behind Shakespearean love.

This is a bi-location event, happening first in Dublin on Friday November 18th at the Dean Hotel in conjunction with VIEW Temple Bar Festival (further details here), and then in Monaghan on Saturday November 19th at The Market Venue as part of the Cavan/Monaghan Science Festival Programme (further details here). So you’re sure to catch it in one of those spots. Huzzah!

‘My Place in Space’, Family show Sunday November 13th (Dublin) and Sunday November 20th (Clones)

Back due to popular demand, my family show about the scale of the Universe and our place in it. This interactive, fun family event opens the Cavan Monaghan Science Festival on Sun Nov 13th at 6pm in Clones and then comes to The Ark for 2 shows (2pm & 4pm) in conjunction with VIEW Temple Bar festival. All these shows are free but booking is required (The Ark here & Clones book here). Both events are kindly funded by Science Foundation Ireland.
