36. Wyvern Lingo

We have the wonderful Wyvern Lingo on the podcast this week. They first came to prominence by their association with Hozier, supporting him on his tour and doing backing vocals with his band (Karen also sings on the hauntingly beautiful duet ‘In A Week‘). Since then they’ve released two EPs, done loads of headline shows and built a loyal fanbase of their own.

We talk about how they met, became friends almost instantly started playing music together; about the skeleton in their closet; about how to ignore the lyrics and enjoy hip hop music. We learn a bit about life as part of a band, getting signed to a label, having people come to your shows, and what that is like. Caoimhe even gets a little X-rated on more than one occasion. Wyvern Lingo are a three-piece from County Wicklow, Ireland.

Friends and bandmates since school days, Wyvern Lingo share a gift for close harmony, keen songcraft and effervescent live performance which belies their tender years. Drawing on a diverse range of influences from pop, rock and R’n’B, their voices interweave to create a fresh, forward-looking sound.

A self-released EP caught the ear of Irish label Rubyworks, and the band toured with Hozier in the UK and at home; Karen and Caoimhe both putting in a double shift by singing backing vocals for their Wicklow friend. Karen also duets with Hozier on the haunting ‘In A Week’ on his multi-platinum debut album.

Wyvern Lingo’s debut release for Rubyworks is a four-track EP called ‘Letter To Willow’. Three of the tracks were recorded in Cologne, Germany with Sierra-Leonean / German artist-producer Patrice Bart-Williams, best known in Europe for his work with Selah Sue, Cody ChestnuTT and Keziah Jones. These tracks were mixed in Paris by Philippe Weiss (Dragonette, George Clinton, K’naan). Additional recording for the title track took place in Dublin with Rob Kirwan (Hozier, PJ Harvey) at the controls.
