Alex Cameron ‘Stranger’s Kiss (Duet with Angel Olsen)’
Alex Cameron walked into a Delorean sometime in the early 80s, went 88 miles per hour, and emerged a couple years ago to give us the best his era has to offer. His new single and collaboration with Angel Olsen is a dream, a woozy, horn heavy effort that will take you along for the ride. Not sure about the lyric about the down syndrome jew, however…
Metz ‘Drained Lake’
Metz have little time for concepts like melody or merriment. New track ‘Drained lake’ is yet another brutal assault on the aural features. It’s industrial, incendiary, and your enjoyment of it will pretty much depend on how much you enjoy music that’s meant to eviscerate the ears as oppose to appease them. The band’s new album Strange Peace will be out September 22
Four Tet ‘Planet’
Four Tet’s 7 minute, minimalist ‘Planet’ is aptly titled, as is sounds like a voyage onto another world. It’s a surreal odyssey that uses it eclectic array of soundbites and instruments to draw us in to its uneasy but never unappealing dreamscape. Plus that mandolin is just precious.
Kelela ‘LMK’
The ‘Alt’ R’n’B of Kelela is at it’s most reliably straightforward here. ‘LMK’ stands for Let Me Know, it’s something she’s asking of an indecisive lover, but the surly vocals, and lustful hooks have us wondering how anybody could be so unsure about such a proposition.
Weaves ‘#53’
Weaves make indie rock with energy and purpose. They only released their self titled debut album last year but have already announced that their follow up, Wide Open, will come out this October. The lead single doesn’t disappoint. ‘#53’ is fearsome fun, an electric charged stomp that expands into something more in the final act thanks some fiery vocal work by Jasmyn Burke.
Deerhoof ‘Come Down here and Say That’ Ft. Lætitia Sadier)
The third single from upcoming album Mountain Moves, ‘CDHAST’ is a typically eclectic effort from an eclectic group. It a bit of a mish-mash between funk and African rhythmic music. The jury is out on whether or not it works.
