John Montague’s Last Collection
A collection of new poems by esteemed Irish poet John Montague will be published on Tuesday. The posthumous collection, entitled Second Childhood, is being published by Gallery Press on what would have been the poet’s 88th birthday, and is being described as including “explorations of childhood and adolescence with its awakening sexuality,” as well as poems that contemplate significant poets Gerard Manley Hopkins, John Berryman and Hugh McDiarmid. The book’s launch was held this week on Tuesday at the Poetry Ireland headquarters and featured Eiléan Ní Chuilleanáin, Tom French, Nuala Ní Dhomhnaill and Peter Sirr as special guest readers.
Details of World Voices Festival Released
PEN have released details regarding this year’s World Voices Festival of International Literature. The event’s thirteenth installment will ” focus its lens on today’s fractious relationship between gender and power.” The aim of the festival this year is to ” connect leading global writers, artists and thinkers with concerned citizens to examine bigotry, misogyny and xenophobia, and to bolster the movement to counter them.” The festival, which will take place in New York City from 1st-7th May, has an impressive list of writers participating so far, including Colum McCann, Nancy Morejón, Patti Smith, Binyavanga Wainaina and Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. This year the festival will also be collaborating with Women of the World, the Apollo Theatre and the South Bank Center of London for a series of events based on activism and global female achievement.
Competitions
The Wundor short fiction contest is a great opportunity for those of you who like to write fiction that is a little unusual. Submissions are open to short stories, collections and novellas and must be between 5,000 and 45,000 words. The winner will receive £500, and the winner and two runners up will have their work published in full or an extract will be published on the Wundor website. Their work will be strongly considered for publication in print, in which case a publishing contract will be offered. Entry fee is £10 and the deadline is next Tuedsay, 28th. Full details here.
The New Welsh Writing Awards are run by New Welsh Review in association with Aberystwyth University and AmeriCymru, are accepting submissions for memoirs and novellas. Each category winner will receive £1,000 cash, e-publication by New Welsh Review on their New Welsh Rarebyte imprint and a positive critique by leading literary agent Cathryn Summerhayes at Curtis Brown. Second prize for each category is a weeklong residential course at T? Newydd Writing Centre in Gwynedd, north Wales and third prize is a weekend stay at Gladstone’s Library in Flintshire, north Wales. All six winners will also receive a one-year subscription to New Welsh Review. In addition New Welsh Review will consider the highly commended and shortlisted nominees for publication in a forthcoming edition of its creative magazine New Welsh Reader with an associated standard fee.
