RTE Radio 1 Short Story Competition
The 2018 RTÉ Radio 1 Short Story Competition in honour of Francis MacManus is now accepting submissions of original, unpublished short stories, written for radio, of 1800 to 2000 words. The writer of the first prizewinning story will receive 3000 euros, the second prizewinner 2000 euros and the third prizewinner 1000 euros. Full details here.
Books Upstairs Poetry Day Ireland Competition
Books Upstairs is pleased to announce its second annual Poetry Day Poetry Competition. The theme this year is ‘Bidding adieu to Britain’. Max 14 lines on the theme. Please send entries in the body of an email to [email protected] with the subject Poetry Competition by 23 April. The winner will receive a €100 Books Upstairs gift token.
Bristol Short Story Prize
The Bristol Short Story Prize is an annual international writing competition open to all published and unpublished, UK and non-UK based writers. They publish an annual anthology of the winning stories as well as presenting cash prizes. The 2018 deadline is 1st May.

Cork World Book Festival
Cork World Book Festival’s vision is that it combines readings by world class writers in a variety of settings. It’s now 13 years since the first Cork World Book Fest. When they put ‘World’ in the title in 2005, it was an aspiration. Now Cork is a vibrant intercultural city, and the Intercultural City is one of the key strands of this year’s Fest. The 2018 Fest, which runs from 23rd to 28th April, is the 14th edition of a festival which continues to grow in range and breadth, and which gets more interesting by the year. Fiction at the Friary with Carlo Gebler
Fiction at the Friary is back for April. This monthly fiction event in The Friary, North Mall, Cork, run by Danielle McLaughlin and Madeleine D’Arcy, features readings by guest authors throughout the year, along with open mic, optional writing exercises, occasional book reviews and plenty of conversation. Everyone with an interest in fiction is welcome to attend this FREE event. April’s event is on Sunday 29th April from 3pm to 6pm with a guest reading from Carlo Gebler.
