#IWD17 | An Incomplete List Of Very Funny Women Pt 1

Happy International Women’s Day everybody! We were going to do something high concept here in the humour section to celebrate but then we decided to just put as much funny stuff by funny women as we could in one place. Then we went too far and it got waaay too long so we had to split it out into three parts. We know we’ve left people out, we know, but we’ll just have to make the best of it. Oh also, I know it’s really bad that this list was written by a man but I’m a terrible editor and left it too late to get someone else to write it. So I’m problematic but I know that I’m problematic.

 Issa Rae

We talked a lot about how much we loved Insecure in our end of year round up. Nothing has changed since then. If you haven’t watched it yet go watch it this weekend. Eight funny, honest episodes and a great soundtrack. Lovely, we’re just getting started.

Rhea Butcher

Rhea Butcher is a standup and actress. She stars in Take My Wife with her wife Cameron Esposito on Seeso. She released her debut album Butcher last year. It’s about her vegetarianism and being mistaken for a boy by flight attendants and all kinds of other things. She’s very funny.

Sharon Horgan

Everyone loves Sharon Horgan. 2+2=4, the Earth moves round the sun, Sharon Horgan is the best. The three universal truths. Catastrophe is brilliant of course but have you watched Divorce yet? You guys, it’s also brilliant. It’s a bit of a slower burn but it’s good. Real good. The second episode of season three of Catastrophe is on right now but I can’t watch it because I’m writing this. Oh the irony. Sharon Horgan, the people’s friend.

Michaela Coel

[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PQ1-RLEyGW8″ align=”center” maxwidth=”702″]

Michaela Coel is very exciting. She’s written and starred in two excellent seasons of Chewing Gum. You can watch them here. It’s very worth your time. What will she do next? A better writer would do some research. Not me though. Not me.

Chelsea Peretti

[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wdnHJtqpxVo” align=”center” maxwidth=”702″]

I have nothing new to say about Chelsea Peretti. She’s amazing. Watch One Of The Greats on Netflix, watch Brooklyn Nine Nine, follow her on Twitter. She replied to former humour co-editor Ellen Tannam last week and nobody’s fully recovered from the brush with greatness.

Avery Edison

Avery Edison is a writer and comedian who is kind of a big deal on twitter. There’s one of her tweets there. She’s very good at jokes. She talks about her experiences as a transgender woman sometimes and does jokes about that too. She’s all round very good.

Hannah Mamalis

Hannah Mamalis is an actress and comedian. You’ve seen her face and heard her voice in a, like, plethora of Irish comedy things over the last few years like Dreamgun, The Mess Around, Comedy Brunch, Couples Counselling, and her own very good standup.

Sofie Hagen

Sofie Hagen is a Danish comedian. She won the Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Award Best Newcomer award in 2015. Her podcast Made Of Human is warm and inclusive and informative but never didactic. She ensures all of her shows are suitable for people who suffer from anxiety by giving them a chance to arrive early and choose appropriate seating for themselves. Basically, she’s a very, very funny person who’s using her influence to reshape the comedy world around her and make it better. Also, you can listen to her being very good on The Alison Spittle Show here.

Jessica Williams & Phoebe Robinson

Jessica Williams and Phoebe Robinson are the hosts of the hugely popular podcast 2 Dope Queens. You know when two hosts just click and everything they do seems effortless? That’s 2 Dope Queens. And they do it LIVE as well. Live podcasts are terrifying but they made that their default mode, they’re fearless. Obvs that’s not all they do. Jessica Williams just starred in The Incredible Jessica James and Phoebe Robinson has a lil side action going on with her other podcast Sooo Many White Dudes (exec produced by and sometimes featuring Ilana Glazer) where she interviews creative people who aren’t straight white guys. Which is fair enough tbh.

Which brings us along nicely to our final entry for Pt 1. I love Broad City. You love Broad City. Everybody loves Broad City.  Have you noticed that you tend to rewatch stuff less now that we’re in the golden age of television and everything’s available all the time? Me too. I’ve watched all of Broad City twice though. I mean, Val right? Who doesn’t love Val?

Ok, that’s part one. See you tomorrow for part two. So many funny women in the world. We’ve definitely forgotten some really important ones.

P.S. Thanks to Ellen Tannam for her help in selecting some of the funny women in this piece. No thanks to Ellen Tannam for leaving Alan to write it all by himself
