#IWD17 | An Incomplete List of Very Funny Women Pt 3

International Women’s Day was over a week ago but we’re still here making a list of very funny women. We’re living that International Women’s LIFE. This is the last one for this year. You know we’ll back though. And again, yes, this piece was written by a man and that’s stupid and worth remarking on but it’s because I’m a bad editor and forgot to assign it to anybody else. Thank you again to Ellen Tannam for consulting with me and suggesting names of very funny women for me to write about. Read parts one and two here and here

Ruth O’Kelly Hunter

Ruth O’Kelly Hunter is an Irish comedian. She was a runner-up in last year’s So You Think You’re Funny contest in Edinburgh. She co-runs the Workman’s Comedy Club with a male comedian. She’s very funny.

Josie Long

Josie Long is a legend. She’s just one of the absolute best. Her standup is angry and friendly and political and inclusive and she just seems like she’d be a good friend y’know? Also, she did a very good episode of the HeadStuff Podcast

Heben Nigatu and Tracy Clayton

[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ID6wU1xOzo” align=”center” maxwidth=”702″]

Heben and Tracy are the hosts of Another Round. They’re amazing, they’re just so listenable. I can’t even begin to imagine the amount of research that goes into each episode. They always sound like they’re just chatting in a corner booth but they know their guests inside out, ready to go in whatever direction the interview takes. Check out this episode where they compare the reactions of black and white comedians to the OJ trial.

Aparna Nancherla

Aparna Nacherla is pretty big but she’s gonna be huge. No pressure like, I just think everybody who hears her likes her and tells a friend so she’s going to get exponentially bigger until she’s doing gigs on the moon.

Kate Berlant

[arve url=”https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=raoe51DZnWY” align=”center” maxwidth=”702″]

Kate Berlant is amazing. I’m a smart boy so I saw her twice at the Vodafone Comedy Festival and she was brilliant both times. I’m not gonna try explain her except to say her that her mind works at about eight times the speed of other people. Watch her episode of The Characters on Netflix, then watch her Vimeo series 555 with John Early.

I feel like I might be breaking some sort of unwritten rule by including Flora Flora on this list. I think maybe she’s supposed to be a secret, an alien whose brain works at ninety degrees to other people’s and you have to pass a test to be allowed know about her. She’s probably the best person on Twitter right now, I know that much. Follow her but don’t tell anybody else ok?

Amy O’Connor

I’d planned on including Amy O’Connor from Irish website The Daily Edge (this is her full name now) before she went viral this week, honestly. Amy’s the one who asked all of our TDs if they liked Beyoncé and then got featured in Vulture, Teen Vogue, Slate, and Vanity Fair. I know right? Amy O’Connor’s been one of the funniest people in Ireland for a long time now though. For example, check out The Making of the Wrigley’s Extra Ad Starring Ashton Kutcher: An Oral History, or Rose of Tralee: A Monologue, or just follow her on Twitter because she’s v v good at it.

So there you have it, the most incomplete list of very funny women of all time. So many very funny women left to list. It’s almost like ‘being funny’ has nothing to do with gender so trying to make a list where that’s the only criteria is a Sisyphean task that will just make everybody hate you. Ah well.
