Film Review | Irish Satanic Panic in Extra Ordinary

Ged Murray Sep 12, 2019 0
You probably already know the work of Mike Ahern and Enda Loughman; the co writer/director team behind Extra Ordinary. You just might not realise it. Under their pseudonym D.A.D.D.Y. (Design, Animation, Design, Design Yeah!) they've created…

Angel Has Fallen | The Best of a Bad Franchise

Ged Murray Aug 22, 2019 0
First Olympus fell, then London fell. Now Angel has fallen. As naming conventions go this franchise sure likes to think outside the box. In all other respects these films have traditionally thought as much and as hard as a sleepwalker. …

Right on the Edge | Steve Bannon Documentary The Brink

Ged Murray Jul 11, 2019 1
In the open moments of The Brink we see Steve Bannon, the former Breitbart shit stirrer, former Trump campaign manager and permanent boogeyman of the left reminiscing about a visit to an old Nazi death camp. It's functional design…

Ged Murray May 10, 2019 0

Film Review | Border Is Messy, Yet Impressively Weird

Ged Murray Mar 6, 2019 0
Border is an intriguing, bizarre, fable-like film that has many admirable traits but never quite comes together. From the off, we are introduced to Tina, a woman who looks like a Neanderthal and can smell people's fear, working as a customs…

Film Review | The House That Jack Built is Relentlessly Boring

Ged Murray Dec 12, 2018 0
The House that Jack Built is ostensibly a film where Matt Dillon's Jack kills a bunch of people in horrific ways. This is a metaphor for art because making art is somehow a lot like cutting the breasts off a screaming woman or shooting two…

Film Review | Gaspar Noé’s Climax Says Nothing Loudly

Ged Murray Sep 21, 2018 0
There are two schools of thought when it comes to Gaspar Noé. One is that he's a gimmicky edgelord, delivering nothing but empty shocks. The other that he is a stylistically and formally daring provocateur creating visceral, experiential…

Film Review | The Nun’s Cardinal Sin is Squandering Its Potential

Ged Murray Sep 9, 2018 1
Surely part of the point of creating an Extended Universe tm is that, aside from the marketing angle, you get to create a sandbox; a larger network of shared stories that can each do their own thing. The Nun, the latest in The Conjuring's…

Film Review | Black 47 is Ireland’s Django Unchained

Ged Murray Sep 1, 2018 0
The trope of the hero who's wronged by evildoers is a common one on screen. It's normally little more than an excuse to justify righteous, cathartic bloodshed. Lance Daly's Black 47, a Famine set,  Irish Western, ups the ante by asking…
