Up this week is Megan Doherty aka @megandoherty.photo a photographer born and raised in Derry, Northern Ireland. Her work follows urban youth within partially documented scenes, evoking ambiguous threads of narrative and providing a hazy glimpse into an underground culture. Dominated by themes of youth, sexuality, subculture, freedom and the evasion of reality, these photographs aim to entice the viewer’s yearning for escape and, ultimately, to allow the viewer to get lost in the same way Megan and her subjects do. Here we present a selection of photographs from her series ‘Stoned in Melanchol’.
What is Instagram for you?
Instagram is a platform in which I can share my work with the public as well as a discover new inspiring photographers, artists and publications.
Why/when did you decide to start sharing your work on there?
I started sharing my work on Instagram a couple of years ago. I found it a great way to reach out to a worldwide audience, the images can reach absolutely anyone who uses the app and the amount of opportunity behind that is really exciting.
How would you describe your style?
Cinematic, hazy and vibrant.
What equipment do you use?
35mm, medium format and Polaroid.
Who has been or currently is an influence on you?
Nan Goldin, Joseph Szabo, Bruce Davidson, Harry Gruyaert, Ryan McGinley.
