2015: A Year of broken Box Office records
Last year was an incredible year for movies, in terms both of creative endeavour and financial success. The movie business broke records with its 2015 box office takings, which hit the $38 billion mark for the first time ever. A significant chunk of this money was accumulated in China, where box office takings were close to $7 billion, almost 50% higher than the year before.
As always, it was the action and fantasy films that pulled in the largest audiences across the globe. We’ve collated a top five list of 2015’s most successful films. All of the films listed are blockbusters that hit the $1 billion mark across global box offices. In fact, 2015 was the first year that five films reached this level of success. Interestingly, as noted by CFD trading company IG the five films hail from just two studios – Universal Pictures and Walt Disney, reminding us that just one movie can have an economic power strong enough to drastically change a studio’s fortunes.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens
Star Wars: The Force Awakens took a gargantuan $2,056,9 worldwide, making it the biggest box office hit of 2015. However, this long and eagerly awaited movie is much more than its bottom line. The film, which reunited many of the franchise’s original cast, was hailed a triumph by fans and critics alike when it was released in December 2015.
Jurassic World
Jurassic World, which stars funny-man Chris Pratt as the hero who saves residents of a luxury holiday resort from the perils of rampaging dinosaurs, took an impressive $1,670,4 in worldwide box office sales. That figure makes it 2015’s second most financially successful film.
Fast & Furious7
Directed by James Wan, Fast & Furious 7 took $1,405,4 at box offices globally. The action film sees Vin Diesel and Paul Walker return as Dominic Toretto and Brian O’Conner, who in earlier films worked together to defeat international terrorist Owen Shaw. Now, they’re pulled from relatively peaceful lives to face Jason Statham, who plays Deckard Shaw, Owen’s vengeful brother.
Avengers: Age of Ultron
This comic-book based movie is the next installment of Marvel’s The Avengers saga. In it, a gang of heroes unite to fight against a dastardly band of villains and criminals. The film took $1,405,4 at the box office when it was released in May, making it 2015’s fourth most successful film.
Minions
A spin-off from the Despicable Me franchise, Minions enjoyed major popularity in 2015 amongst family audiences. In the film, the lovable yellow buddies, Stuart, Kevin and Bob are recruited by super-baddy Scarlet Overkill who’s plotting to rule the world. The film took $1,159,4 at box office worldwide.
In terms of sheer financial success, it is Star Wars: The Force Awakens that stands out as victor in this group of world-beating films. But, when it comes to the pure entertainment factor, which is the film that you could watch again and again?
