Netflix News| 4 | Featuring Master of None

Howdy folks, Halloween is done and dusted and I have zero horror movies for you this week. I need to even things out after my last article. What I do have for you is plenty of brand new additions to the Netflix catalogue; Comedies, war dramas, independent movies and much more. I also give you a run through of what’s coming soon and what you need to watch before they disappear forever.

New To Netflix

Master of None (2015) [Starring: Aziz Ansari]

The fantastic Aziz Ansari, from the multi award-winning Parks and Recreations, has a brand new original comedy just for you Netflix viewers. Master of None is a semi-autobiographical account of an actor living in New York. Ansari tackles the problems of type-casting, parenthood, affairs and more as he portrays Dev in this fresh comedy which he also writes (with Alan Yang) and directs.

I’m just over halfway through the ten episodes and I am really enjoying the shit out if it. Ansari has created a comedy that is not only very real in parts but hilarious and laid back at the same time.

The supporting cast of Lena Waithe, Noël Wells, Kelvin Yu, Eric Wareheim and H. Jon Benjamin are fantastic and the musical support from the like of Father John Misty and Aphex Twin top off several reasons to get watching this show.

Home Alone and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York (1990, 1992) [D[Dir. Chris Columbus, Starring: Macauley Culkin, Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern]h3>

Feeling down at all? Can’t wait to get into the Christmas spirit? Don’t fret; two quintessential holiday films are ready for viewing right now.

I don’t need to get into how great and iconic and fantastically funny these movies are. They are the Home Alone movies. THE ONLY HOME ALONE MOVIES. So if the weather is getting you down, call in sick for work, grab a blanket and have yourself a merry little (early) Christmas. If on the other-hand you are thinking “It’s fecking 6 weeks away dude, it’s only just been Halloween”, well then know that these jewels are awaiting your festive spirit whenever you cheer the fuck up.

Enemy at the Gates (2001) [Dir[Dir. Jean-Jacques Annaud, Starring: Jude Law, Joseph Fiennes, Rachel Weisz, Ed Harris]>

Based upon the nonfiction book of the same name, Enemy at the Gates is a fictional retelling of the story of two snipers pitted against one another in the battle of Stalingrad. With an impressive cast including Jude Law, Joseph Fiennes, Rachel Weisz and Ed Harris, Enemy at the Gates delivers a tense war drama that merits a watch.If there is one major drawback to the movie, it is the accents. Some actors can’t do them, others don’t bother. It seems as if it was decided on the first day to make up your own mind and just go with that. Plenty of decent war-time destruction and epic staging makes some of the visuals a real treat. It may not be Saving Private Ryan, but if you are into movies of a similar vein, it will certainly not be a waste of your time.

 

Doomsdays (2013) [Dir[Dir. Eddie Mullins, Starring: Justin Rice, Leo Fitzpatrick]>

Justin Rice (Mutual Appreciation) and Leo Fitzpatrick (The Wire) star in Eddie Mullins’ directorial debut about two roaming squatters who care for little in this pre-apocalyptic world. This independent comedy is as strange as it is enjoyable as we venture with the two friends as they break into holiday homes to steal food, drink and a bed to sleep in. The men are thrown slightly as they find themselves with two new stragglers but will they help or hinder the vagrants’ game-plan?

Saving Mr. Banks (2013) [Dir. Jo[Dir. John Lee Hancock, Starring: Tom Hanks, Emma Thompson, BJ Novak, Jason Schwartzman]>A thoroughly enjoyable film, filled with nostalgia, that you can watch with your Ma. Saving Mr. Banks tells the story of Walt Disney’s struggle to get the writer of Mary Poppins to sign over the rights for a movie. Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson both give stellar performances in this delightful heart-warming tale.

Top Boy is the English equivalent to America’s The Wire. Yeah, I went there. It is fantastic… BUT I really should give you fair warning: Both seasons are available on Netflix, it ends on a cliffhanger and no, there’s no season 3. I don’t just mean on Netflix, it just never got made.

That said, this show should definitely be watched. The ensemble cast are at times scarily realistic to their gangland counterparts and similarly the mix of teenage violence and innocence, on screen, feels like it is coming from somewhere more real than you are used to in a tv show.

Exit through the Gift Shop (2010) [Dir. Bank[Dir. Banksy, Starring: Banksy, Invader, Mr. Brainwash]he story of how an eccentric French shop keeper and amateur film maker attempted to locate and befriend Banksy, only to have the artist turn the camera back on its owner. The film contains footage of Banksy, Shephard Fairey, Invader and many of the world’s most infamous graffiti artists at work.

William Eubank, Starring: Brenton Thwaites, Olivia Cooke, Beau Knapp, Laurence Fishburne]hough The Signal has been on Netflix for a month now, I only just got around to watching it, so I’m including it here. It’s my article. I can do what I like.

The signal is not your run-of-the-mill science fiction movie, however I can not call it completely original either. Any fans of conspiracy theory, possible alien/government connection movies will feel right at home here as we see three friends dragged out to the middle of the desert before things go from weird to weirder. Brenton Thwaites leads the way with a super performance and Laurence Fishburne goes all “Morpheus” as the calm and collected government-type. The film’s use of special effects are impressive and at times unexpected. This one will keep you guessing and that, on this occasion, is a good thing.

Francis Lawrence, Starring: Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson], this film has been on Netflix for some time but seeing as the final part of the Hunger Games saga is set to hit cinemas next week, I thought it would be nice of me to remind all of you that Part One is ready to re-watch before you hit the big screen on November 20th. With Bob And David (2015) [Starring: Bob O[Starring: Bob Odenkirk, David Cross] 13th Nov

This new Netflix Original series reunites Bob Odenkirk and David Cross for four all-new episodes of absurd, sharp sketch comedy. The final episode of Mr. Show with Bob and David premiered on December 28th, 1998. That’s a long time ago. Since then we have become very familiar with the two as Odenkirk became a household name portraying Saul Goodman in Breaking Bad and reprising his role for the Netflix original, Better Call Saul. David Cross became the butt of many of his own jokes in Arrested Development as Tobias from 2003-06 on Fox and again came back from the dead on Netflix as they ran the last series of the adored show. It is easy to see why they both trusted Netflix as a resting place for their new venture (or re-venture). The first sketch has been released already and includes some of the cast members from their previous project.

The film follows the surf and skateboarding trends that originated in Venice, California during the 1970’s.

I have just gotten my hands on the first seven episodes of the series and I the only thing holding me back from watching them is writing this damned article. I will have a full reaction piece to you very soon. Until then, check out the second trailer, hot off the press.

No matter how fantastic Netflix are at getting new titles added to your growing list of must watch movies and shows, they unfortunately cannot hold on to them forever. Generally they carry a title for 12-24 months, this however is purely down to the contract with the industry big-wigs so never take that for granted. Hopefully I can keep you updated on all the movies that Netflix lose so you can get a few last views in before you are forced to bid them adieu.

Pixar’s Monsters Inc. and Disney’s Mulan wave goodbye together on the 13th of November, which is very close to right now. Monster’s University is also up on Netflix so if you were planning having a bit of Pixar-back-to-back-madness, now is the time to do it.

Once Upon A Time in Mexico says adiós on the 14th of this month. The return of the mythic guitar-slinging hero, El Mariachi (Antonio Banderas), in the final installment of the Mariachi/Desperado trilogy. The saga continues as El Mariachi makes his way across a rugged landscape on the blood trail of Barrillo (Willem Dafoe), a cartel kingpin with one last score to settle who is planning a coup d’etat against the president of Mexico. Enlisted by Sands (Johnny Depp), a corrupt CIA agent, El Mariachi demands retribution.

Fast & Furious 6 burns out (I am nailing these puns) on the 16th. This is the sixth one of the Fast & Furious epic franchise and features loads of cars and explosions and stuff… I don’t know. I’ve never watched them. Here’s the trailer, if that helps narrow down which one it is.
