Poem of the Week |27| Hanging #2 (Things Fall Apart)

Hanging #2 (Things Fall Apart)

For JL

As I relax in Inchydoney
reading ‘Things Fall Apart’
by Chinua Achebe

you encounter a real life
hanging and with no time
to think you scale the tree
and save a man’s life.

Twenty four hours later
I could do nothing to save
Okonkwo, only read to the
end of his story.

About Author

Bernadette Gallagher

Bernadette Gallagher has been writing a journal for many years and has recently started to write poems. She was born in Donegal and apart from a few years in Dublin and the Middle East she has lived in County Cork for most of her life thus far. Whilst working full time she completed a degree and masters in computing and continues to work as a project manager. During 2015 Bernadette underwent an operation and during a period of recovery she spent a large part of her day reading and writing. She always felt that one day she would write a short story or novel but when she started to write in earnest poems emerged. Her husband, the painter John Philip Murray says “Bernadette’s is a fresh voice exploring the nuances of memory and experience”.
