Duality Of Function| Group Show at Galway Arts Centre

Galway Arts Centre, 47 Lower Dominick Street, Galway
Galway Arts Centre presents ‘Duality of Function’ curated by Kate Howard & Rob D’Eath. The show features the work of; Piet Stockmans (BEL), Alicja Patanowska (POL/GBR) and Isobel Egan (IRL).
These artists explore aspects of one of the most iconic production materials in world history, porcelain clay or ‘white gold’. Their practices are a continuation of the investigation into ways in which clay can help to inform our preconceptions and challenge our prejudices.

Martina O’Brien at Draiocht Blanchardstown

The role of climate scientists, environmentalists and futurists – the seers of contemporary society – are explored by Martina O’ Brien in Continuum. These figureheads are turned to, to make sense of the increasingly unsure nature of our changing climate, and this can transform our understanding of our future landscape and our place within it. Naturalist book illustrations of the past, such as those seen in Gilbert White’s 1789 Natural History of Selborne and the Collins’ New Naturalist Series of the 1960s, offered environmental information to the public through pictures. Using the aesthetics of naturalist illustration, O’ Brien examines the role climate science plays in the public imagination, and the powerful effect it has in shaping how people see the world.
Martina O’Brien holds an MA in Visual Art Practice at the Institute of Art, Design and Technology, Dun Laoghaire, 2013, having previously studied at undergraduate level at both Dun Laoghaire College of Art and Design and the National College of Art and Design.

The first solo exhibition by artist and poet Roisin Power Hackett, As a Chinese Jar, is an exhibition of paintings and live art performance that takes its name from a line in the TS Eliot poem, Burnt Norton. In her paintings and performance Power Hackett questions peoples’ relationships with their surroundings, depicting an abundance of intricately patterned wallpapers or rugs and blurring the edges between the person, their clothes and their environment.

A stick-maker and seanchai from Askeaton, Co Limerick, Seanie Barron has been working on his craft for decades; it is part of a longstanding Irish tradition that he enlivens with his own inventive features such as whistles for injured walkers and ‘ticklers’ to hold down wire fences. Occasionally their handles take on strange and charming forms,a goat’s head, a walrus, a badger, which seem to emerge organically and effortlessly from the wood.

Since the 1980s, Chris Martin has been a significant figure on the New York painting scene, notable for his exuberant experimentation with the medium. Martin’s enthusiasm for painting and its history is expressed literally in the work. Images are appropriated from newspapers, books, magazines and album covers; slices of bread and vinyl records have been attached to his canvases, which are almost always covered with vibrant colours and, on occasion, large quantities of glitter. A hugely prolific and expressive artist, Martin makes much of the value of mistakes, bad taste and inconsistency.

The Korean Photobook at the Burren College Of Art

Gallery hours : Monday – Friday, 10am to 5pm
PhotoIreland presents an exhibition of over 35 photobooks from South Korea at the Burren College of Art. Representing a great sample of the prolific contemporary photographic practices in the region, the list includes names like Heinkuhn Oh, Heeseung Chung, Won Seoung Won, and Yoo Young Jin. Many of these books were kindly donated to the collection by Korean Artist and Professor Kyungwoo Chun, after they were presented at Photobook Week Aarhus 2014, and were brought to Ireland with the support of Beate Cegielska, Director of Galleri Image, Aarhus, Denmark.
The exhibition will also include visual responses to the Korean Photobooks by BCA students, created during a MasterClass with visiting photographer, Andrew Miksys.
