Supermovies News: From the Internet Bullpen to You | 4 |

Another fortnight has passed and more news from the world of Supermovies has graced the Internet and now here it is, served up to you like you did something to deserve it… I spoil you, really.

Paul Bethany on The Vision and Civil War

The first person to play two characters in the MCU (J.A.R.V.I.S and The Vision), Paul Bethany was at hand during the AsiaPop Comicon in Manilla last weekend. Off the back of his impressive showing in Age of Ultron, Bethany promised more of the same when he returns to the role in Civil War next year. Talking about bringing the iconic character to life Bethany said:

I was given comics. I also was looking to think about what could be edifying for me to learn. I took the opportunity—you see my character get born… something unlikely to ever happen to me again. He must be both omnipotent and yet totally naive at the same time

So where will the powerhouse stand in the next instalment of Captain America? Will he side with Cap or with Iron Man?

Is he going to be a force of good or a force of evil? It was really interesting, fun to play with, because he’s dangerous, you don’t know if he’s going to go one way or another. I’m continuing that theme in Captain America 3.

So no clues there, but lets be honest, we weren’t expecting too much.

Civil War Trailer breakdown

One of the main attractions for audience members in Manilla was the screening of the Civil War trailer. Ever since its showing at the D23 Expo there have been many reports about what happened on the giant screens. And now Manilla got a brand new trailer, it has plenty of the stuff I originally commented on a few weeks ago but there were some new scenes included. Obviously there are spoilers included, but if you want to know what to expect you can have a read through a play by play here.

While we are on the topic of Civil War, check out this brilliant fan made trailer for the Marvel spectacular courtesy of Brown Table.

Man of Steel 2 and How You Could Make a DCU Movie

Man of Steel - HeadStuff.org

Man of Steel director Zack Snyder recently talked to canoe.com about the soon to be released Batman Vs Superman movie and if there was a Man of Steel sequel in the works. It doesn’t look likely as Snyder talked about Dawn of Justice:

I think in a way Batman v Superman is Man of Steel 2, Justice League is kind of the transcendent, knights-of-the-round-table of the story. It’d be interesting to think about what a standalone Superman movie might be.

So it sounds like a standalone sequel isn’t really on the cards for now. However Dawn of Justice seems to link directly from Man of Steel and so is it really needed? Personally I don’t think so.

Snyder also talked about a cool competition he is part of with Doritos. For the last 9 years they have been giving budding directors the opportunity to make a Super Bowl ad and this year they are adding a Supermovie twist to the deal. Along with 1 Million dollars and your ad shown during the Super Bowl you will be brought in the the Warner/DC world to work alongside Zack Snyder in a future DCU feature. Could you be working on the set of a Justice League film? Competition details are here.

To round off the Dawn of Justice news, Warner Bros. Studios have released a video to highlight their new studio tour. CAUTION: You may drool over your laptop/keyboard so be careful.

Suicide Squad Villain Rumours

There has been an unconfirmed rumour shuffling along the fanboy grapevines of the main villain in the Suicide Squad film so obviously some possible SPOILERS below.

With the Suicide Squad trailer racking up more YouTube views than Batman Vs Superman, there is obviously a huge amount of interest in this super-villain get together. As was suspected from the beginning of casting and cast photos, it was assumed that Jared Leto’s Joker would be the main baddie that the rag-tag inmates were banding together to stop. Now, it has been rumoured that Enchantress will be the Squad’s main focus as they try stop her wreaking havoc as she attempts to resurrect her recently murdered brother. Upon second viewing of the trailer you can see that in all of the team-shots Cara Delevingne is suspiciously absent. So there is clout behind the rumour. My only worry is I really don’t know if Delevingne has what it takes to carry the weight of a Supermovies’ villain all on her lonesome. Only time will tell if this rumour plays out so we’ll probably have to wait until the next trailer, or a slip at an interview.

Casting for Doctor Strange

Doctor Strange - HeadStuff.org

A little over a week ago Jeff Sneider, of TheWrap, got the nice little exclusive. It is not yet confirmed which character McAdams will play however Dr. Steve Strange’s long-running romantic interest Clea is the obvious choice. For those of you unfamiliar with Clea, Brian Michael Bendis (one of the finest current comic-book writers) described her as: “the mistress of the Dark Dimension and she’s Strange’s ex-girlfriend/wife. She was trained by Strange, right there in his home. She was his prized pupil. She was to Strange what he was to the Ancient One [Str[Strange’s instructor in the mystic arts]t as Mistress of the Dark Dimension she hasn’t been on this plane of existence a lot lately. And who’s going to take her serious in those pants?”

In more casting news for the mystic MCU spectacular, the great Mads Mikkelsen (TV’s Hannibal, Casino Royale) is supposedly in talks with Marvel over the possibility of becoming the movie’s villain. Although Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) has already signed up to play Baron Mordo there are plenty of villains in the magical tales of Doctor Strange to fill; Dormammu, Blackout, Nightmare, D’Spayre, or perhaps Mephisto.

Ryan Reynolds Goes Meta on Deadpool

With Deadpool just around the corner (Feb 2016) Ryan Reynolds will be doing the rounds to promote the weirdest and one of the most exciting Supermovies to hit our screens. During his interview with GQ, Reynolds got a little meta with his explanation of why Deadpool is gaining so much traction.

It’s a genre. There are good horror movies and bad horror movies. There are good comedies and bad comedies. Think of it like that. Think of it less about just superheroes. I do believe that they explore similar archetypes a lot, so I think that notion can be somewhat fatiguing, maybe. I think one of the reasons that Deadpool has gained a lot of momentum isn’t just that it’s funny or isn’t just that it’s rated R. The meta aspect is very important. So I think Deadpool’s coming along at the right time, because it’s also speaking to that generation and that group of people that have seen them all, seen all these comic-book films and enjoyed them all to varying degrees of success. But I think it’s speaking to them as though the guy in that red suit is one of them, to some degree.

You can read the full interview here.

Deadpool & Gambit to be part of X-Men Universe

Deadpool - HeadStuff.org

Although somewhat expected the Sony Supermovies Cinematic Universe (or the X-Men Universe) will be expanding and will be including Deadpool and Gambit. Producer Simon Kinberg talked to MTV recently about the cross-overs:

The idea is that we’ve sort of reset the timeline after Days of Future Past in some ways, and if not erased, certainly allowed for change from X1, 2 & 3, everything from Days of Future Past forward, 1973, everything we set now becomes canon. So the Gambit movie, the Deadpool movie, will exist in a world that acknowledges whatever happened in Days of Future Past and moving forward. Doesn’t mean they’ll always interact with those characters, obviously, it’s not like every movie has all the characters, but they all have to exist within the same rules. There will be interplay between different characters in different movies.

Jessica Jones Netflix Teaser Trailer

It’s nearly time for one of my favourite collections to be brought to the small screen. Off the back of Daredevil’s success, the expectations are high for the next instalment of Marvel and Netflix’s collaboration. If you get a chance get your hands on ‘Alias‘ and ‘The Pulse‘, which are two collections from Brian Michael Bendis (who I mentioned above as one of the greatest writers out there and something of a hero of mine), as they take you through the history and adventures of Jessica Jones. An ex-superhero, now private detective, Jones is a complicated foul-mouthed troubled protagonist and I fell in love with her from the first issue of Alias. She wants a normal life but knows that in her line of work and with her history that is not as easy as others make it out to be.

Starring in the Netflix original series is Krysten Ritter (Breaking Bad) as the titular PTSD-suffering hero, David Tennant (Doctor Who) as Kilgrave aka The Purple Man, the lead villain of the series and Mike Colter who will be portraying Luke Cage before starring in his own Netflix Marvel original in the near future.

Check out the teaser now and get your hands on those titles before the full series goes live on November 20th.
