Tittererer’s Digest #10 (feat. Monty Python)
Compadres, welcome. How have we all been? Christmas and New Year’s are long gone yet I’m still living like Henry VIII. Eating and drinking a huge amount of artery clogging, decadent crap. I’m genuinely concerned I may have gout. Usually I find I’m too special, interesting and unique to begin my health kick in January (like the rest of the unimaginative plebs) so, being an individual, I usually wait until February. But it’s really starting to take its toll now. To be honest, I’m surprosed I’m able to type. Anyway, enough about me and my problems – on with the Digest!
Clip of the Week
My clip of the week comes from comedians Holly Burn and Amy Dallmeyer. It features Burn playing Victoria Beckham, showing the unseen Dallmeyer around her newsagent. It’s a perfect pastiche on Vogue’s frankly ridiculous 73 Questions with Victoria Beckham. You don’t have to watch the original to enjoy Burn and Dallmeyer’s parody, but it will only enhance the experience if you do. The original is here. On TV This Week
I’ve got three little tips for your comedy televisual delectation this week.
First up, Charlie Brooker’s Weekly Wipe is back. Brooker’s brilliant series of Wipe review shows have been around since BBC FOUR’s Screenwipe premiered in 2006. There’s since been Gameswipe and Newswipe as well as four annual ‘year wipes’. You can see pretty much all of them for free right here. Weekly Wipe is an all encompassing, satirist’s look back at what’s gone on during the preceding week. Pretty straightforward, except it’s being done by the hugely entertaining and insightful Brooker (as well as the likes of Limmy, Philomena Cunk and Barry Shitpeas). Thursday January 29th at 10pm on BBC2.
Secondly, Jessica Hynes (Spaced, Twenty Twelve and W1A) stars in her continuing suffragette sitcom Up The Women. Beware ye folk not fond of anything even remotely broad… it’s a studio sitcom! And therefore you shall hear the audience laugh. They’re not telling us when to laugh mind, they’re just laughing. Anyway, it’s got a smashing cast and a some very tight and (above all) funny scripts. Well worth a watch this Wednesday January 28th at 10pm on BBC2.
Finally Monty Python’s Personal Best is a series that was first aired in the US in 2006. It’s a retrospective of the Python’s work, focussing each week on a different individual member. All five living Python’s are interviewed and it’s a lovely ‘in’ to the group, if you’re feeling a little daunted by their overwhelming oeuvre. Eric Idle is up first on Thursday 29th January at 9pm on Sky Arts 1.
Any Other Business
– The trailer for the Tina Fey (and Robert Carlock) comedy The Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt has *dropped*. 30 Rock is one of my all-time absolute favourite shows. Fey and Carlock are geniuses. Plus I’m a big Ellie Kemper (Bridesmaids and The Office) fan. So I’m obviously very excited about this. Also it’s interesting that the show has moved from NBC to Netflix, before it has even begun. Anyway, here’s the trailer. It begins streaming on Netflix in March.

– Comedian Will Smith (The Thick of It and Veep) has written a novel. It’s called Mainlander and it’s about “not belonging”. He’s a super funny and smart guy. It’s not an out and out comedy by the looks of it, but I’ll definitely be giving this a read when it’s out. You can pre-order it here.
