The Exhibitionist (Week c/17 Nov) Pull Bite Rally
There are some interesting happenings this week in the art world. Dublin City Council’s Vacant Space scheme is back and they have a few new venues to offer for ‘creative groups to use for cultural purposes’. It’s a fairly open scheme with reduced rent an incentive for cash-strapped artistic types. Obviously it’s a big undertaking and not for everyone but if space is a priority for your artistic practice more information can be found here.
In exhibition land, VISUAL in Carlow is currently showing a major new exhibition by Sean Lynch, Ireland’s representative at the 2015 Venice Biennale. As well as being an all-round lovely man, Sean’s work has combined the work of a historian and artist to create incredibly interesting installations, sculptures and publications that explore layers of Irish history, from the ridiculous to the sublime, and offer an alternative reading of art’s influence on contemporary Irish society.
‘For the Birds’ is an exhibition specially commissioned by VISUAL and is based on the Irish myth of An buile Suibhne, or the Frenzy of Sweeney. Cursed to be half-man, half-bird, Sweeney hopped throughout Ireland lamenting his woes in lyrical verse, until he reached a farmhouse in St. Mullins in Co. Carlow where he found a strange form of kindness – each evening he was invited to drink milk out of a bowl of cowdung. In collaboration with sculptor Tom Fitzgerald, Lynch reimagines this scene in the context of Carlow’s contemporary agricultural industry. Well worth a look ahead of Venice next year.
In Dublin, NCAD have a pretty extensive show coming up in association with Black Church Print Studio. ‘Pull Bite Rally’ is the first exhibition to mark the Black Church Print Studio’s dynamic initiative ‘Process’. As part of the Studio’s artistic programme, ‘Process’ invites leading art practitioners to work with the resources and expertise of the Studio in the production of original artworks. For the ‘Pull Bite Rally’ exhibition artists Brian Fay, Damien Flood, Jesse Jones, Isabel Nolan and Sarah Pierce present their artworks and continued collaboration at NCAD Gallery. Pull Bite Rally is the first exhibition to mark the Black Church Print Studio’s dynamic initiative Process. As part of the Studio’s artistic programme, Process invites leading art practitioners to work with the resources and expertise of the Studio in the production of original artworks. For the Pull Bite Rally exhibition artists Brian Fay, Damien Flood, Jesse Jones, Isabel Nolan and Sarah Pierce present their artworks and continued collaboration at NCAD Gallery. Through explorative processes, the artist’s intent is facilitated by the skills and experience of a dedicated printmaking team of master printmakers and print coordinators. This collaboration between artist and the Studio aims to give practitioners a comprehensive understanding of the processes and concepts of printmaking leading to new directions in their practice.
Integral and in addition to the exhibition, responses from practitioners, leading figures in the visual arts and the wider public are invited to participate in rigorous inquiry and discussion that Pull Bite Rally invokes. NCAD Gallery’s collegial context affords the opportunity to form close exhibition partner relationships with staff and students from the NCAD College departments and further afield to form a parallel event series. Over the four week exhibition period a programme of events, screenings and talks are scheduled in consideration of the central theme of process. Engaging key topics fundamental to the artists’ project experience, with reference to: the potentiality of collaboration and creative professional links for artists; printed matter and publishing; authorship and reproduction; medium specificity; professional practice pathways, skills and exchange; pedagogical foundations and shifts in contemporary art practice.
To mention only a few of the event highlights, Declan Long is in conversation with artist and 2014 Turner Prize nominee, Ciara Phillips, on Monday 24th November, 6pm. In a special one-off episode of TV Museum: The Mini-Series, Maeve Connolly investigates temporal, social and political aspects of serial publication and distribution. Connolly’s titled ‘Serial Publications and Practices’ lecture reconsiders some of the strategies employed by General Idea and also explores the work of various contemporary artists and institutions engaged in the production of newspapers, journals and serialised moving images, posing questions about the changing form and function of seriality in art, media and culture – Wednesday 3rd December, 5pm. ‘Repeat. Don’t stop’ is the NCAD MA Art in the Contemporary World organised public seminar that delves into ways to critically engage with current forms of artistic repetition and reproduction, considering how ideas and processes explored in the Pull Bite Rally exhibition relate to the broader contexts of twenty-first century art, Friday 28th November, 2pm.

Studies on Shivering

This exhibition, Studies on Shivering represents part of a wider project by the artist Damir Ocko (HR). In this project, the artist creates a dialogue between film, poetry, musical scores, objects and drawing to explore a central theme; the shivering body as a metaphor for resistance and unrest. The title of the film in this exhibition, ‘TK’, comes from the phonetic description of the sound of teeth or stones clashing together. These types of sounds create a visceral, psycho-acoustic response in the listener and the effect is one of Ocko’s central concerns.
The main element of the exhibition at Temple Bar Gallery + Studios will be comprised of an installation of the film work ‘TK’ (2014). In this film, the central protagonists stand unclothed in a frozen winter landscape, willing themselves to be still in the face of the incontrollable and involuntary bodily function of shivering. This rhythm is mirrored in edited intercuts in the film between this scene and shots of the trembling hand of a man suffering from Parkinsons disease as he struggles to transpose the words of a poem written by Ocko. Throughout we can hear the voice of the narrator, reciting the poetry which forms the ‘score’ of the film.
Studies on Shivering combines elements such as scores, collages, architectural intervention and collaborations to extend the normal cinematic space and to create a hybrid work in which film, research and poetry are equally weighted.
Ocko completed a residency at Temple Bar Gallery + Studios in 2011. During this time he made his earlier film work ‘We saw nothing but the uniform blue of the sky’ this work took stuttering – a speaking disorder – as its central point, and in this way it directly relates to ‘TK’, which extends the artists interest in bodily, muscular activity and breakdown as a political language.. TBG+S will present a screening of ‘We saw nothing but the uniform blue of the sky’, which will be attended by the artist, on Friday 21st November 2014 at 6pm.

The Silva Field Guide to Birds of a Parallel Future
20th November – 4th December 2014
For his first solo exhibition in Europe, Rick Silva will present new video, print, and sculpture works. Titled ‘The Silva Field Guide to Birds of a Parallel Future’, the exhibition focuses on a series of 18 short animations the artist completed in 2014. The video series combines science fiction and multiverse theories with birdwatching and ornithology. WIRED recently called these experimental 3D animations “glitchy, curious things—some mesmerizing, some arresting.” For the physical installation at BLOCK T Silva will be presenting all the video series as a single channel projection, alongside 3D printed polygon egg shaped hard drive sculptures, and stacks of take-way posters.

Special guest: Loic Thisse, Selektor Magazine. Selektor is a contemporary photography magazine, a quarterly collection of photographer’s monographs in magazine form. Issue number two is dedicated to Irish photographer Shane Lynam, and it will be presented at Polycopies during Paris Photo and launched in Ireland at Après Paris, at The Library Project.

PhotoIreland presents Greetings from Ireland, a project that seeks to reinterpret Ireland’s image for the tourism industry with the work of 36 artists.
Join us for the launch Thursday 20th November, 6pm at The Library Project.
PhotoIreland has opened a discussion for a contemporary reimagining of Ireland by inviting local and international artists to present their personal interpretation of what the country is today.
The images selected will be presented in a series of 36 postcards at The Library Project, in Temple Bar, the tourist quarter per excellence. ‘Greetings From Ireland’ seeks to offer the tourist and visitor alike an alternative overview of Ireland, more attuned to its complexities.
The project will fill the 36 pockets of a postcard stand with 36 different images, by 36 different artists. At the launch, visitors will also find a limited poster series, a set of fine art prints, and a 2015 calendar.

Martin Gale at Taylor Galleries

Taylor Galleries is proud to present Territory, an exhibition of new paintings by Martin Gale the runs at the gallery from 21 November to 6 December 2014. It is Gale’s 15th solo exhibition and it opens exactly 40 years after his very first one-man show at Bruce Arnold’s Neptune Gallery in Dublin in 1974.
Territory consists of a series of new paintings in oil and watercolour. Martin Gale’s work responds to the contemporary Irish landscape, offering an often dark commentary on rural Ireland in which ordinary – even familiar – landscapes become arresting and uneasy. The figures peopling Gale’s landscapes often seem absorbed in something unseen, prompting the viewer to continue the suspended narrative. His realist style is meticulously detailed in execution, with an edge often derived from the psychological tension that is implicit in much of his work.
